Morphometric analysis of the parotid gland affected by alcoholic sialosis

2008

Background:  In alcoholic parotid sialosis, the gland is frequently enlarged due to ductal and/or acinar hypertrophy, ductal hyperplasy and stromal fat infiltration. The aim of this study was to determine acinar and ductal dimensions, the number of striated ducts and the proportion of fat tissue in patients with and without alcoholic parotid sialosis. Methods:  Twelve parotid biopsy samples from patients with hepatic alcoholic cirrhosis and those from seven controls were used. A morphometrical study with a digital image analyser attached to an optical microscope was carried out. Direct and indirect indicators from acinar and ductal dimensions were recorded. The number of striated ducts and …

Compound odontoma erupting in the mouth: 4-year follow-up of a clinical case

1992

A case of a compound odontoma erupting in the oral cavity is presented: a follow-up study of 4 yr has been performed evaluating the possible relationship with a previous dental trauma. A discussion is presented concerning the etiologic aspects, clinical signs, diagnostic aids and therapeutic approaches to this type of lesion.

Stabilizing versus Destabilizing the Microtubules: A Double-Edge Sword for an Effective Cancer Treatment Option?

2015

Microtubules are dynamic and structural cellular components involved in several cell functions, including cell shape, motility, and intracellular trafficking. In proliferating cells, they are essential components in the division process through the formation of the mitotic spindle. As a result of these functions, tubulin and microtubules are targets for anticancer agents. Microtubule-targeting agents can be divided into two groups: microtubule-stabilizing, and microtubule-destabilizing agents. The former bind to the tubulin polymer and stabilize microtubules, while the latter bind to the tubulin dimers and destabilize microtubules. Alteration of tubulin-microtubule equilibrium determines th…

Recurrences following treatment of proliferative verrucous leukoplakia: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

2021

Objective A systematic review and meta-analysis was made of the incidence of recurrences in patients with proliferative verrucous leukoplakia subjected to different types of treatment. Methods The study was carried out following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement guidelines. A literature search was made in the Medline (PubMed), EMBASE and Web of Science databases, together with a manual search, covering the period from 1985 to January 2020, with no language restrictions. Studies were included if they described treatments applied to at least 10 patients with the corresponding outcomes. Methodological quality was evaluated using Jadad sca…

Expression of cytokeratin 17 mRNA in oral squamous cell carcinoma cells obtained by brush biopsy: preliminary results.

2009

Background:  The aim of this study was to determine the detection of cytokeratin (CK) mRNA in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cells and to evaluate the CK relevance for OSCC diagnosis in a brush biopsy test. Methods:  Fifty-two pairs of OSCC cells and normal oral mucosal cells were obtained by brush biopsy from OSCC patients. mRNA was extracted from cell pellets for real-time quantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). The over-expression levels of CK 17, CK 19 and CK 20 mRNA in OSCC cells were examined by SYBR green real-time RT-qPCR. Results:  Compared to normal mucosal cells, the over-expression of CK 17 mRNA was detectable in 40 OSCC cells (76.9%), that o…

Primary angiosarcoma of the alveolar mucosa in a haemodialysis patient: case report and discussion

1994

A case of a haemodialysis patient with a primitive angiosarcoma of the alveolar mucosa is reported. The vascular origin of the tumor was confirmed by the immunohistochemical data which showed strong positivity for Factor VIII-related antigen and for vimentin, whereas stains for desmin and cytokeratins were negative.

Epulis granulomatosa as an oral manifestation of Klippel-Trénaunay syndrome

2006

The Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome (KTS) was first described by Klippel and Trenaunay in 1900. It is characterized by the triad of hemihypertrophy of soft and hard tissue, naevus flammeus and venous varicosity in the affected area. Though all oral tissues may be affected, only 5% of KTS show manifestations in the head and neck region. Only three cases are described with an oral manifestation, showing gingival overgrowth clinically and histologically corresponding to a pyogenic granuloma. It is still uncertain whether the combination of gingival fibromatosis and KTS is significant or coincidental. We report about a 25-year-old patient with KTS and recidivous gingival fibromatosis, clinically and…

Human papillomavirus frequency in oral epithelial lesions

2005

BACKGROUND: Oral human papillomavirus (HPV) prevalence varies according to geographical occurrence, the type of lesion, and the method of diagnosis. The polymerase chain reaction method (PCR) appears to be more sensitive and can be easily applicable to epidemiologic studies. OBJECTIVES: To determine the frequency of HPV and its genotypes in oral lesions among patients attending a reference clinic of a university hospital. METHODS: PCR was performed to identify HPV DNA from samples of oral epithelial lesions in 80 patients. For HPV DNA amplification, MY09/MY11 consensus primers were used and specific genotypes were identified through restriction fragment of length polymorphism (RFLP) pattern…

Oral manifestations in patients with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease: a single-center case-control study

2008

OBJECTIVE: To assess the occurrence of oral pathological changes and symptoms in patients affected by gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD). PATIENTS AND METHODS: 200 patients with GERD and 100 matched healthy controls were studied. Thorough visual examination of the dental and oral mucosal tissues was performed and medical history relevant to oral symptoms was collected. The primary outcome was defined as a statistically significant difference, between the study group and controls, in the presence of the following indicators: soft/hard palate and uvula erythema, tooth wear, xerostomia, oral acid/burning sensation, subjective halitosis and dental sensitivity. Statistical analysis include…

Analysis of differentially expressed proteins in oral squamous cell carcinoma by MALDI-TOF MS

2010

J Oral Pathol Med (2010) 40: 369–379 Purpose:  To explore the presence of differentially expressed proteins in OSCC for discrimination of tumour and normal mucosa to establish potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets. Experimental Design:  Paired protein samples of 12 individuals (tongue cancer and non-cancerous mucosa) were separated by two-dimensional polyacrylamid gel electrophoresis. The protein patterns were compared pairwise and protein spots were quantified. We identified about 70 regulated proteins which we subsequently identified by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. Results:  Cancerous and non-cancerous tissues could be most precisely distinguished by a panel of proteins. They inclu…
